Land O' Lakes Fish & Game Club

Protocol for the LOL Fish & Game Club Senior Environmental Scholarship Application, Selection of Students, and Payment of Awards.

The LOL Fish & Game Club awards scholarships to graduating seniors who have chosen a college major that will enable them to make a positive contribution to the environment. They must be students of good standing, have shown positive contributions to the community and present proof of enrollment at a college or university with a course load of 12 credits or more.

Seniors from the following high schools are eligible: Northland Pines High School, Watersmeet High School and Phelps High School. If the Board of the Fish & Game Club indicates that funds are available, applications for the scholarship are solicited from the three participating schools and applications forms are sent out in early spring of each year.

Completed applications forms must be received by the Scholarship Committee by March 31 of each year. The Scholarship Committee consists of three to four members. Currently these are: Ursula Charaf (Chair), Rhoda Sharpee, Barb Benson and Christine Ebert.

After the applications have been received, the Scholarship Committee meets and evaluates the applications. Those that do not meet the criteria are immediately eliminated and a letter of explanation is sent to the applicants. Qualifying applicants are then notified through their respective Guidance Counselors and an interview with each is arranged.

The interview not only covers the academic achievements and plans, but the students are observed as to their level of confidence, determination and leadership qualities.

Depending on the number of qualifying applicants, one or more students are selected who will share the available funds. A member of the Scholarship Committee then attends the Award Ceremony of the respective schools and presents the award(s) to the students.

In order to receive the scholarship funds (usually spread over at least two semesters), the students must provide proof of registration and a list of the courses they are enrolled in. For subsequent semesters the same is required and, in addition, a transcript of the grades from the completed semester. Upon receipt of these documents, the Treasurer of the Fish & Game Club dispenses the appropriate amounts.
